I am now officially unemployed. 15 years means nothing these days. Well, I will persevere and get through this. But it sure sucks!

    Sadness
I was awakened last night by the twin sonic booms of a shuttle landing. Farewell, Endeavour.

    Writer's Block: Merlin revisited
    Working quickly, I would:
Eliminate all knowledge of and memory of all religions from everyone.
Make me and my family youthful and healthy.
Add a real number followed by about twenty zeros to my bank account.

    Weekend
Both sons will be home this weekend! Kevin competes Sunday in the Disney half iron man, we will show up for the T2 and cheer him on during the run.

Chris gets two weeks off, with a free ticket to any US destination, because he has served his first year in Guatemala. Dangerous postings get the free ticket. He is going to Alaska, but spending three days with the parental units first.

Well, after close to 2 months of waiting, my 2nd new IPad is to be delivered tomorrow morning before 10:30. The last time Fedex lost it. So, while they were quick to pay for a replacement, I have had to wait. 2nd time is the charm, right? No wait, that is the 3rd time. Oh dear!

Apple has been great, as usual. Comped me the smart cover and paid for overnight shipping, even though it was a Fedex screw up. I wait with trepidation.

    Hijacked
my LJ account was hijacked, or LJ changed the password. But now all is well and it would take a real effort toc crack this pw. Hope I don not forget it...

    Got a birthday right!
My wife recently had a birthday and her present was a tad late. But it was delivered yesterday. A Lexus CT Hybrid, 40-42 mpg. Mary says I did good. I shudder to think of the precedent I set. It's hard to believe my 38 mpg Camry hybrid is now the gas guzzler in the family.

I sold her Accord, making 5k more than the dealer offered. Yay for Craig's list.

YAY! My new IPad got delivered. Unfortunately, it was signed for by a P. Chung, who or where that person is a mystery. Fedex is searching for it. As long as they deliver it to me by my birthday, I'll be happy. It was yesterday.

    Guatemala
I just returned from a trip to Guatemala. Wonderful country! I got to see a volcano blowing steam/smoke. I was glad it was a considerable distance from us.

Also got to try zip lining. There were a total of 8 lines, each about 600 meters. I fumbled a bit on the first two, but then settled down and landed like a pro on the last 6. Went through a tree with a family of spider monkeys. Expressive critters, I could tell they were thinking 'What the hell are you doing here?'

We stayed in Casa del Mundo (House of the World) on Lake Atalan. The hotel is built into the side of a cliff. More stairs then can be believed. But getting to the top was well worth it. Great food, good hiking. And I wore my Santa hat on Christmas morning. Crazy gringo...

    Two good things!
First, I got to meet Achariya at the Apple store this weekend. I've known her on LJ for a decade, first because we were both LOTR fans. I'm an amateur fan compared with her! She was very outgoing and friendly, just like her journal. She also commented that I was like mine. Meaning, I suppose, that my shyness was obvious. But it passes. I'm sure I'll be more relaxed next time. And she gets to hang out around my favorite toys! So where is my new Apple TV?

Second, I kicked some MSFT butt this morning, getting a 95 on my Server 2008 Networking certification. Second attempt, a mere 61 the first time around. Now for a real effort to forget all the crap I crammed. I never had a teacher who deliberatly tried to trick me, so taking a MSFT test was a whole new experience. But they didn't beat me twice!

Also, at the mall, we got a Mary a NEX-5, a new camera by Sony. Somewhere between a point&shoot and an SLR. I ordered a 32 gig memory stick, so we will shortly be good to go. It was a delayed anniversary gift. I figure she should get what she wants for putting up with me for 35 years. Plus a few years living together before, so we have been together since the dawn of time.

I think couples have three relationships. The first is the hot romantic period. The second is kids, hopefully with some romance as well. Then the kids leave home and you have to get to know each other all over again. It's kind of neat, actually.

    Merry Christmas
I completed a number of fun things today. First, the arrangements for our trip to Guatemala this Christmas. Our son is a new foreign service officer the the Guatemala embassy. With no seniority, we visit him this year, he can't make it to Florida. It will be fun.

Guatemala City has an ideal climate, at 5000 feet it is in the seventies during the day and fifties at night year round. And December is the dry season, so all will be well.

And at worked I delivered a project that has been giving me fits, so I'm glad that is done.

I spent an hour Sunday playing with an IPad. It was really a fun machine, great for video, text, pictures. All I could see outside (it was sunny) was fingerprints. But inside, it's color is wonderful. Come to think of it, I never use a laptop outside either.

I think I ordered a machine with too much memory. I was using a 32 gig, and it had plenty of room, even with 40 apps, HD movies, and numerous books. So the 64 gig I ordered may be overkill. But you will never hear a guy complaining about having one that is too big. *bada boom*

I got so excited Saturday, I got an email from Apple saying it had shipped. It had, it being the charger for the IPad. I won't be fooled when they ship the case. Teases!

    Ipad
The reviews are so great that I gave in to the hype. I ordered my 64G 3G Ipad today.

And I found out that there is: http://calibre-ebook.com/ which is freeware and will convert all my various text files to Ipads preferred format. Heh, It converts .lit files, for Microsoft Reader. Buh Bye, Microsoft Reader. It's the last app of theirs I use.

    My two sons
My son has started his new job as a foreign service officer for the Dept. of State. After training (4 months to a year) he will be assigned an embassy and begin his travels. Finally, a job that appears to suit his personality. We will go to DC in about a month for his 'official' swearing in. With any luck, Hillary will address the new grads and then mingle. I'd like to meet her. I finally feel that son #1 has a career, rather than a job.

Son #2 is in the best shape of his life in soon begins his racing season. Hopefully, this year he qualifies for Olympic trials for 2012. He lives at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, where they have a clock that counts down to the Olympics. It recently went to zero, causing Kevin to comment that he hopes he does not see that again. If he did, it would mean he was not at the games in London. We will be in London as well, somehow!

A pickup truck beat Air Force One. But I don't think the Republicans won, the Democrats lost. Anyone running as a non-Democrat would have won. The same in the 2008 elections. Republicans were justly kicked out. But the Democrats thought they had a mandate from that election to govern from the left, even though BHO ran as a centrist. As this election shows, we want to be a centrist nation. First the Republicans were slapped, but did they seem to learn anything? Hell no. And now the Democrats have been slapped, but will they learn? Hell no.

Oh well, I feel better when the parties in both houses are more or less even. They strangle each other and leave us alone.

Finally, the last frosty morning for awhile. Tomorrow morning will be in the 40's. I've never seen it stay so cold for so long in Florida. I'm such a wimp in the cold. But I don't have the proper clothes for it, either. A UN study released yesterday says this is the beginning of a 30 year cool period. So much for global warming.

And I'm now getting 40+ mpg in my hybrid. Yay! But maybe I should drive a smoky car to try to warm things up? Nah, I hate the stink.

    Smug on a Friday
I bought my first hybrid a few weeks ago. Lovely conversation this morning:
Friend: "So what milage are you getting from your car?"
Me: "Haven't been to a gas station yet, I'll let you know in a couple of weeks."

    Halloween

These were my pumpkins this year. I offered extra candy to anyone who could interpret the message. Sadly, few adults knew the Pi symbol. Fewer yet could figure out 'Apple Pie'. Happily, one 10 year old walked up and said 'Cool. Apple pie', she was my hero of the evening.

Of course, it could also be my lack of skill as a carver.
